In this course, the professor will use a mini-unit from Year 3 to give teachers in-depth instruction in the “why” and “how” of Socratic discussion at both dialectic (jr. high) and rhetoric (high school) levels of discussion. During each live session, attendees will watch and/or participate in actual discussions, while the professor gives practical tips on how to draw out information through Socratic questioning.
The professor will also provide guidance for the tricky task of grading discussions. Attendees will learn how to take apart a Tapestry history discussion script and decide which parts are important to include for discussion with their students. Finally, the professor will give advice on when to follow “rabbit trails,” and how to deal with difficult students.
